Todd MacFarlane; Top Notch Training Lacrosse
Background: In 2005, MacFarlane launched Top Notch Training, a development program that, according to its Web site, is designed to teach players the “proper game of lacrosse.” The Maryland native has played lacrosse at every level, including NCAA Division II at Pfeiffer University in North Carolina and professionally with the Anaheim Storm, which has suspended play this season.
Coach Mac: Known as “Toddy Mac” in the lacrosse community, the 34-year-old Leucadia resident has coached several teams in San Diego County, from recreational to college club. His teams have posted a 110-20 record. As head coach of USD's club team, MacFarlane led the Toreros to a national championship and garnered Coach of the Year in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League.
Big kid: For the past two years, MacFarlane has volunteered his time to coach the Encinitas Mustangs middle school team. He's stepped down from USD to devote himself full-time to his TNT camps and developing younger players. “I'm a big kid myself,” MacFarlane said. “I'm committed to teaching kids the right way to do things on and off the field. I want to be a good role model.”
A parent's thanks: Cindy Van Buskirk has three children who have played on MacFarlane's teams. The lacrosse mom said in an e-mail, “There are not a lot of options for kids to learn this Native American sport, and Coach 'Toddy Mac' is passionate about teaching them, and teaching them well. Unlike other sports businesses, which focus on their two or three superstars, Coach Mac develops every one of his players to the best of their individual ability.”
